It is often the case that torque in a rotating shaft can be measured with a stationary, reaction torque sensor at some point in the powertrain. This is due to the existence of an equal and opposite force (torque) necessary to hold the drive and driven equipment in place.

For example, the torque to drive a pump at a constant speed can be measured as the static torque necessary to hold the pump or the motor from rotating.

The reaction torque approach is often less costly and because reaction torque sensors have no moving parts, requires no maintenance. Reaction torque sensors are recommended in lieu of rotary torque sensors when steady-state measurements are acceptable.

All of our sensors utilize strain gages and are maintenance free with no moving parts. Reaction Sensors are used in applications where in-line torque measurements are required and angular motion is limited.
